Each drawing begins long before the graphite touches paper.
It begins in quiet — in the still space between seeing and understanding.
Before the first line, there is always a pause: a conversation between attention and restraint.

My process is not fast, because slowness is a form of respect. It allows me to look until the subject stops being a thing to render and becomes a presence to listen to.

The Flow of a Project

Every work follows a rhythm that has become almost ritual:

  1. Listening — I begin with time. Time to look, to walk, to let an idea mature. The subject often finds me, not the other way around.

  2. Composition — Sketches, photographs, notes. The architecture of meaning takes shape long before the visible form.

  3. Execution — Graphite, charcoal, and erasure become the language. Layer upon layer, the paper learns to breathe.

  4. Reflection — I step back often. Distance reveals the truth that closeness hides.

  5. Presentation — The drawing is framed, but the story remains open — it belongs to whoever looks at it.

Each step is a dialogue between control and surrender — between precision and the acceptance that perfection is not the goal.

Tools and Materials

The studio is filled with the simple instruments of my trade:
graphite sticks by Caran d’Ache, Nitram charcoal, Hahnemühle Nostalgie paper, and the soft daylight that filters through the window each morning.

There is a certain smell to it — a mixture of paper dust and patience. It is not a place of productivity, but of attention.

The Philosophy Behind It

My drawings are built on a few quiet principles:

  • Craft & Patience — Precision born from repetition.

  • Silence & Absence — What is not drawn is as vital as what is.

  • Texture as Truth — Surfaces carry stories, even when the subject has none left to tell.

  • Tradition & Transformation — To draw is to honor what endures while allowing it to change.

Each mark is a negotiation between gesture and restraint — a small act of faith that the unseen will reveal itself through effort.

Sharing the Work

When a drawing leaves the studio — for a gallery wall, a collector’s home, or a digital post — I try to keep the same tone: quiet, honest, and measured.

The work continues in the gaze of others. What I draw is only half the story; the rest is written in how people stand before it — in silence, in thought, in memory.

Closing Reflection

In the end, my work is less about images than about time —
how it moves through us, how we hold it, and how, if we listen closely enough, it teaches us to see again.

Pricing Policy

RJ Blanchette’s artwork prices are based on drawing surface and technical complexity.

  • Base rate: CHF 0.60 per cm²

  • Minimum price floor: CHF 600

  • Exhibition premium: +25 % for exhibited works

  • Commission premium: +20–30 % (30–50 % deposit required)

  • Hourly benchmarks: CHF 35–45 for baseline work; CHF 60–90 for studio/exhibition pieces

All prices include:

  • Professional framing (Cadre Skava Nielsen, black wood)

  • Trilingual Certificate of Authenticity (FR/EN/DE)

  • Materials, administration, and finishing
